Final idea!

After researching into successful magazines purely for the male audience, such as; Mens Health magazine, Men's mag and FHM... I have noticed they all have two things in common...

  1. They all have pictures of desirable, beautiful women, normally central on the front cover.
  2. They all have tips and tricks for men to keep toned and healthy.
Visual codes:
I have decided to incorporate this into my magazine cover. I have decided too stick to my initial ideas of basing my cover on a popular action film - which is notoriously going to appeal to a male audience. The film i have chosen is Wanted. Therefore, to appeal to men even more, i will have the central image being a seductive picture of Angelina Jolie, whom is evidently the main character in the film.

Layout and design:
I have thought alot about the typography i am going to be using for my cover and have decided i want the style to reflect the film it'self. Therefore, the titles typography for the film it'self might well be the style i use to make a clear connection to the audience- as it is an action film so something like italics just wouldn't be acceptable to the audience.  Furthermore, the title should be punchy, bold and exciting if it is to appeal to it's male audience, but also to showcase the film in an upbeat way.

Use of graphics:
Corner banner: As my magazine cover is for males, i want there to be a corner banner indicating what else is inside the read. I will make it about health and nutrition, which i researched to be another popular men's mag topic. Using this banner, men can have a greater understanding of what they can expect and look forward to inside the magazine itself.

Language:
Use of language is very important for a magazine cover, as the cover is what sets the tone of the magazine itself. I have thought about incorporating rhetorical questions to make the audience think, alliteration for a dramatic effect and use of hyperbole to make the film sound FANTASTIC!

Change The Way You See Everything

  • Immediately from looking at this book cover it automatically changes the way you see the title - as it is all backwards.

  • The colours are bland and don't make a statement or stand out to its audience. However, this makes the bold, black title stand out more.

  • Composition: The whole of this image is covered however, there is alot of empty space as there is only letters.

  • There are no pictures which makes you assume that this book would be for an older audience, purely for reading.

  • They take the concepts of semiology and arbitrary symbols that represent letters and words and turn them round to show the alternative way of thinking that is explored in this book and suggested in the title.

  • The and (&) sign is an arbitrary symbol as we have learnt to recognise it over time. Maybe used to make it look more interesting and too differentiate that the book was written by two people - a partnership.

Developing my idea further...

When thinking about my initial ideas i thought about doing a magazine cover primarily for men, including things such as; ways to get a six back and generally trim and tone your phisique.
I also contemplated doing a nutritional cover, with the gender being nor male or female.

I now think i am going to do a magazine for men still, which will allow me to research things outside the girl magazine genre, focusing manly on a new action release. Nevertheless, i want to have small captions around the sides of the main focus of the cover on nutritional foods and ways to keep fit, for men, which is something alot of magazines do when appealing to the male audience.

Therefore, instead of creating something based on one topic (a film) like this: http://c0181321.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/PHFzhIJHzrdpJG_1_m.jpg
I am going to be encorporating other aspects that appeal too men, for instance, stuff like this: http://www.thedivanetwork.com/wp-content/uploads/david-beckham-mens-health-magazine-cover.jpg

Im still not entirly sure if this idea will work, therefore i need to do more research into it before deciding on my final idea.

Magazine cover

I am thinking about doing a magazine cover but aiming to men, having an action film theme. I will choose one film in particular and center the cover around that film. Taking into acount the genre will most likely be action for men, i will include masculine colours and language which is nutoriously found in male magazines.
In order too choose the film i will be centering my cover around, i will reserch the top 10 films out today, and pick which one seems most appealing and exciting.

An alturnative idea i have is doing a cover of a nutritional magazine. This will have a neutral theme however, have links and twists which will generally appeal more to woman such as; healthy dieting tips and relaxation methods.
